Sample Space

A sample space (denoted $S$) is the set of all possible outcomes of a random experiment.

Each individual outcomes in $S$ is called an elementary outcome.

The sample space is the first component of a Probability Space.

Examples

• Rolling one die: $S=\{1,2,3,4,5,6\}$
• Tossing two coins: $S=\{\text{HH},\text{HT},\text{TH},\text{TT}\}$
• Temperature tomorrow: $S=[-50,50]$ (a continuous interval)
